    Job Summary

    The ITAM System Engineer will contribute to a team of ITAM Specialists working to assist SHI customers in understanding their Hardware and Software Environments. The ITAM Systems Engineer will join the IT & Software Asset Management (ITAM) Team to focus primarily on the discovery, collection and analysis of software and hardware information.


    The ITAM System Engineer can be office based from either Austin TX, Somerset NJ, Paris France or Milton Keynes UK offices. It is expected that this role will require occasional travel both nationally and internationally (30%).

    Responsibilities/Job Function

    The ITAM Systems Engineer will focus primarily on the discovery and collection of software / hardware inventory but may also be involved in the software / hardware life-cycle – advising customers on license entitlements, purchasing, deployment, decommissioning, and license re-allocation.  The ITAM Systems Engineer will need to become familiar with our preferred discovery tool JDisc, service delivery platform MIE by eTelligent Solutions Inc, as well as other approved department tools and technologies.  The candidate will need to become familiar with the licensing of most major publishers' products and their use rights.


    The ITAM Systems Engineer will:

    • Guides customers through the process of collecting software / hardware installation data.
    • Help to provide technical support to customers as they implement and use the SHI Software/Hardware Discovery or other customer owned tools.
    • Understand the underlying discovery tools and network technologies to help isolate and resolve customer problems when it comes to gathering asset hardware and software information.
    • Participate in peer reviews to oversee the ITAM Technician, as well as secondary review to the ITAM Administrator activities, while ensuring the process and quality standards are maintained. 
    • Quality check ofcustomers’ hardware and software asset information by the ITAM Technician and/or ITAM Administrator in order to maintain an accurate and complete inventory.
    • Identify potential “problem” areas within customer environments and provide advice on problem resolution.
    • Communicate accurate and relevant conclusions to customers across the entire life-cycle of a ITAM project. Including producing and presenting analytical results and assuring projects get closed to the satisfaction of all parties. 
    • Ensures all ITAM projects are conducted professionally, ethically, and in a manner consistent with SHI standards. 
    • Keeps up to date with industry trends and new ITAM services requirements.


    • Schedule and/or attend Kick-off or Discovery conference calls with our customers to identify the topography of their IT systems, the products and platforms they utilize and select the appropriate discovery tools to collect installation data from these environments.
    • Provide technical support to customers as they implement and use the Software/Hardware/Network Discovery tools.
    • Once inventory data is gathered, review data and complete a formal customer sign off and approval process.
    • Schedule and attend as many calls with the customer as needed until Software/Hardware/networking data gathering is complete.
    • Provide detailed and incremental status reports to customers.
    • The ITAM Systems Engineer will complete all work within agreed timescales and KPI’s.
    • Collect and manage ITAM-related information from SHI, customers, and publishers.
    • Assist Sales Representatives, Business Development Representatives and ITAM Solutions Consultants in managing project timelines and customer expectations.
    • Develop into a “go-to” resources for SHI regional sales teams to answer ITAM specific questions.
    • See himself/herself as part of the greater whole in meeting or exceeding business objectives on a regular basis, as well as assistance in driving key initiatives for ITAM.
    • Stay up to date on new product technology offerings, manufacturer specific training and certification/accreditations.
    • The candidate will be required to take on-going Technical or ITAM/SAM accreditations and certifications as well as attend partner training.
    • Attend, support and represent SHI at conferences and events.
    • Learn and follow the ITAM standards to ensure all ITAM projects are conducted professionally, ethically, and in a manner consistent with SHI quality standards.
    • Must keep all customer information confidential.

    Technical Skills:


    The position requires a detailed knowledge of all aspects of the IT life-cycle including licensing, purchasing, deploying, tracking, reporting, decommissioning, and harvesting software and hardware assets. The candidate must have technical experience and deep supporting knowledge of IT infrastructure, servers, personal workstations, supporting networks, databases and storage devices.

    Candidate should have the following:

    • Strong Knowledge of and experience with domain administration (Active Directory, group policies, etc.).
    • Knowledge of and experience with operating system administration (registry, permissions, etc.).
    • Administration of LANs, WANs and internet/intranet networks, troubleshooting, ping, tracert, telnet.
    • Skilled knowledge of database systems, Oracle and/or Microsoft SQL Microsoft Server usage and language (read, understand SQL scripts)
    • Experience with virtualisation platforms such as VMware, Citrix, App-V and Terminal Services
    • Scripting methodologies skills in order to increase automation of administrative and discovery functions; experience in writing Windows PowerShell scripts
    • Working knowledge of software inventory systems (like JDisc, SCCM, Altiris, IBM Bigfix etc)
    • Experience with and knowledge of non-windows platforms such as UNIX/Linux, HPUX, AIX, Solaris, MAC OS etc.


    The candidate will be required to be certified in the first 3 certifications listed below; if the candidate is not currently certified in at least three of the topics, they are required to study and pass a minimum of three of the following accreditations within 90 days of commencing the role. The supplemental certifications are a plus.

    Candidates should possess a bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience as well as a minimum of 3+ year of experience in a systems operation or networking position.
